Kathmandu, August 28 – The Government of Nepal has given major social media platforms, including Facebook, TikTok, and X (formerly Twitter), a deadline of seven days to register their operations in the country.

According to officials, the decision was made during a cabinet meeting on Monday in line with the “Social Media Use Management Directive, 2080 BS” and a Supreme Court order.

If the platforms fail to comply within the given timeframe, they will face a gradual ban. The Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MoCIT) will direct the Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA) to block unregistered platforms. However, once registered, the services will be reactivated.

The government has stated that the move is aimed at regulating online platforms, ensuring accountability, and bringing international companies under Nepal’s legal framework.
